Our Summer Reading Program (SRP) combines fun activities and entertaining events to support and increase reading skills–and learning– all summer long. (Shhh–kids just think it’s fun!) . Runs June 1 - July 31, 2025.
GLADL offers traditional paper and digital options to participate in SRP, plus great resources for beginning readers to adults. We have digital collections and book recommendations for all ages. We have storytimes, themed entertainers and educators, creative crafts and games – inside and outside too. And of course, we’ll have Art themed instant prizes for each completed kids reading log!
Help CAHS care for animals in need. Items especially in need are listed on our Event Calendar. Drop off donations at GLADL for delivery to CAHS.

Free admission! Families with young children are invited to a fun, free Lansing Symphony Orchestra Family Concert, presented by Gretchen Morse, right here at the library! Gretchen will introduce her instrument, the oboe/English horn & share fun information about her instrument and its role in the orchestra. Enjoy a 30-minute family-friendly performance -- perfect for youngsters! No Babysitter required for this FREE concert!

Join the wildlife educators from Nature Discovery for this STEAM activity to learn about the colorful natural world around us. From birds to chipmunks; turtles, frogs and snakes, to insects, moths and butterflies-- it's a colorful world out there! Why are animals so colorful? Why are animals the colors they are? What colors can you see in the natural world around you every day? Weather permitting, we'll take a "Color Discovery" walk to see the colorful nature around us. Presented by Nature Discovery.
Nerf Battles! Players will run, dodge, and dive as they try to out-wit and out-blast the competition during NERF Mobile Games! From 'Capture the Flag' to 'Eliminator' to 'Zombies Vs. Humans,' players will put their physical and mental skills to the test with several game styles perfect for colorful summer Fun, indoors or out.
We’ll read a story, sing and rhyme together, do a fingerplay, and have fun while learning and playing. We’ll end with time for caregivers to socialize and babies to play & interact with each other.

We'll learn a bit about Michelangelo before we get started creating. One of the things Michelangelo is famous for is painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. So we're going to create like him by drawing or painting on a "ceiling" by getting underneath our tables and chairs. Paint will be washable, but wearing clothes that can get messy is recommended.
Make beaded bracelets using pony beads and other findings to show off your own unique style!
Mark Crilley, published professional American comic creator, artist-- and children's book author & illustrator will host this workshop for kids on Comic & Manga Drawing! Mark is the creator of Akiko, Miki Falls and Brody's Ghost.
Mark will share drawing techniques and tips, for kids ages 8-14. Follow along, step by step through at least four separate lessons over the course of one hour. Some lessons will be based on participant requests, guaranteeing that you'll learn about what interests you most! Perfect for fans of Manga, Anime and graphic novels! Paper and pencils provided, so there's nothing you need to bring apart from your own enthusiasm for drawing!

Learn emergency procedures, discipline techniques, diapering, age-appropriate activities, rescue breathing, the Heimlich maneuver, and basic first aid skills needed while babysitting. Upon workshop completion, students receive an American Red Cross babysitting course certificate. Registration required, class size limited. Participants bring a sack lunch, water bottle. Kids--Come Join the Parade! We’ll provide flags, garland, crepe paper and more to “Yankee-Doodle” up your bike, wagon, scooter or stroller-- then ride with us in the parade! While supplies last. Helmets encouraged, adults walk with kids.

Join Science Heroes on our mission to turn science into an adventure! Through hands-on experiments and fun, interactive stories, we get kids excited about the science that’s all around us as we celebrate the scientists who color our world with art! The combination of theatrical presentation and interactive science entertains and keeps kids engaged!
Use yarn, pipe cleaners, dot stickers, feathers, straws, embroidery floss and other supplies to recreate a famous painting of your choice.
This MSU Libraries Publishing Services workshop presented by Julie Taylor will provide information about the book printing services available at the MSU Libraries, how to self-publish including purchasing ISBNs, registering your copyright, and options for selling your book online. We will also discuss book design basics using Microsoft Word and additional resources available.
Learn more about fly fishing at this hands-on workshop! The first half of the class will focus on the various equipment used-- fly rods, reels, lines, leaders, waders, flies as well as an overview of the different methods of fly fishing with dry flies, nymphs, streamers, etc. The second half of the class will be hands-on fly casting instruction with club provided fly rods. Poor Camilla Cream… her skin has turned green. And red, orange, yellow, blue, and purple, too! Our skin cannot change colors like Camilla Cream’s, but we can make color-mixing creations. Let’s read the story, “A Bad Case of Stripes” and engage in chromatography and color-mixing chemistry activities.
No need to get the jitters as you create your own colorful critter! Use your artistic abilities and engineering skills to design and create your own battery-powered critter equipped with a vibrating motor.
Babies can be artists too! Bring your little one and make some mess-free art. Babies will paint by doing what babies do - tummy time!
